A Peek into the Writing World with Ken and Deborah Raney

Listen to the episode here!

Ever wondered what it takes to forge a successful writing career? Whether your dream is to see your book on a bookstore shelf or to navigate the complexities of self-publishing, the journey is rarely a straight line. It’s often filled with surprises, rejections, and unexpected blessings.

Today, I’m excited to offer you an exclusive peek into the writing world through the seasoned eyes of Ken and Deb Raney. With decades of experience in both traditional and indie publishing, they’re here to share the invaluable lessons they’ve learned. Their insights are a must-read for any aspiring writer!

Deb’s Advice for Writers: Start by Reading!

Deb’s first piece of advice to writers is simple yet profound: Read voraciously! Before you can write well, you need to immerse yourself in good writing. This is the best way to absorb the nuances of storytelling and enhance your craft. And Deb’s advice is not just theoretical. She wrote her first novel in just five months, and despite facing rejection (a common experience for all writers), she eventually secured a contract with Bethany House Publishers that helped put her son through college!

Know the World of Publishing: Traditional vs. Indie

The publishing world has changed a lot since Deb started writing. On this podcast, Deb shars her experience of starting in traditional publishing and transitioning to a hybrid approach, reissuing her backlist as indie books. This shift allowed her to regain control of her older books and breathe new life into them with new covers (thanks to Ken’s design skills). Today, they have a foot in both worlds, and Deb admits she’s not sure she’ll ever return to traditional full-time publishing.

Book Covers Are Crucial

Ken adds an interesting perspective from the design side. When it comes to book covers, he’s seen firsthand how crucial a professional-looking cover is to attracting readers. He’s even started experimenting with AI to generate stock images that are tailor-made for specific stories—a tool proving invaluable for indie authors.

Navigating the Publishing Process

So, how do you choose the right path for your writing? Here’s what Deb and Ken recommend:

  1. Educate Yourself: If you’re new to the industry, a traditional publisher might be the best route to learn the ins and outs. They handle the editing, cover design, and marketing, which can be overwhelming for a newbie.
  2. Attend Writer’s Conferences: There’s no better way to network with editors, agents, and other writers. It’s also a great place to get feedback on your work.
  3. Know Your Goals: Are you writing for your satisfaction or to build a career? Your goal will help determine whether indie or traditional publishing is right for you.

The Importance of Patience and Persistence

Deb’s journey has been marked by patience—waiting for the right time to start, the right publisher, and her books to gain traction. She encourages writers to be patient with themselves and the process. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and as Ken likes to remind her, even the best-laid writing plans often require last-minute adjustments. This is a journey that requires persistence and determination, but the rewards are worth it.

Persistence is another key ingredient. Ken’s story of receiving 80 rejections for a children’s book didn’t deter him. Instead, he kept submitting and eventually got published, teaching Deb the importance of sticking with it even when it gets tricky.

Embrace the Tools of the Trade

While the writing world constantly changes, Deb and Ken encourage writers to embrace today’s tools. Whether it’s AI for cover design, online resources for learning, or using podcasts and apps to expand your reach, the opportunities are endless. As writers, we’re called to share stories that bring hope and inspiration, and the tools we have today allow us to do that in incredible ways.

Grit, Heart, and a Whole Lot of Faith

Writing isn’t just about skill. It’s also about heart, faith, and grit. Whether you’re navigating traditional publishing, self-publishing, or something in between, it’s important to remember that every writer’s journey is different. Some seasons require patience, others require stepping out in faith, but through it all, God is faithful. This faith is not just a belief, but a source of inspiration and hope that can carry you through the toughest of times in your writing career.

So, keep writing, whether you’re just starting or a seasoned writer. Keep sharing your stories. The world needs them.
