Author Picks

authorpicks

Summer is here! One thing I love about summer is having time to relax and dive into a good book. I wanted to beef up my “to be read” pile and asked a few of my fellow writers what books they loved and would recommend. Here they are:

My pick!

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 10.56.34 AM copy 3Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck

Every young woman wants to be swept away by a handsome prince! Rachel’s writing is fun and delightful!

Mary DeMuth

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 10.53.03 AMAfter the Leaves Fall by Nicole Baart

This is a beautifully written coming of age piece that has stayed with me long after I put the book down. Baart writes with gritty beauty, and her characters are flawed but amazingly real.

Brandilyn Collins

51aHqIXH10LPromises to Keep by Ann Tatlock:

Our book club recently read this wonderful novel. Ann’s writing is simple yet profoundly elegant as she tells the story of two little girls and their dreams to reunite with their absentee fathers.

James L. Rubart

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 10.54.13 AMHacker by Ted Dekker

Hacker is a modern-day allegory that will open your eyes to the world all around us that God longs for us to see.

Anne Mateer

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 10.58.14 AMFull Steam Ahead by Karen Witemeyer

Full Steam Ahead is a fun historical romance build around some interesting historical facts and a very unique hero and heroine that will make you smile as well as think.

Hannah Alexander

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 10.58.53 AMInsight by Deborah Raney

I know it’s a few years old, but it still speaks to me with a fresh voice, deep characters and believable challenges we might face someday.

Gayle Roper

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 11.01.26 AMRestoration by Wanda Dyson

A fascinating look at the problems, human and spiritual, in restoring an abandoned church.

DiAnn Mills

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 11.03.16 AMThe Book Thief by Makus Zusak

A masterful story that weaves a young girl’s passion for books during a time in Germany when many books were outlawed.

Janet Chester Bly

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 11.04.00 AMThe Turning by Davis Bunn

I suggest it because it’s a multi-layered, high drama story with compelling characters who each hear a voice they must decide whether to obey or not.

Kathleen Y’Barbo-Turner

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 11.04.36 AM A Table at the Window by Hilary Manton Lodge

I LOVED Hilary Manton Lodge’s A Table at the Window. I loved the food, family and romance that Lodge writes about so well.

This summer I’ve got a TON of books on my “to read” list, especially since I re-discovered my love for the local library and discovered the adult bookworm program. 🙂

So far I’ve enjoyed Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and am currently reading The One & Only by Emily Griffin. Books that are “on deck” are Water Walker by Ted Dekker and Demon: A Memoir by Tosca Lee. Not to mention a couple of others that are part of my book club’s list.

It’s going to be a busy summer full of reading!!!!

I recommend By the Light of the Silvery Moon by Tricia Goyer. It is not only an exciting adventure aboard one of the greatest ships in history, but also a good romance. This story also reads clearly as a Christian novel which not all Christian fiction does.

I review books for NetGalley, Revell, and others so I eat, drink, and breathe books. My husband has stopped asking me how I’m going to read all the books I have on my Kindle and Nook, plus the ones that come in the mail. I even checked one out of the library the other day so I can read a series for free before I get to the one I received that’s later in the series. Oh, my!
Right now I’m reading The Pelican Bride by Beth White. It’s hard to put down. I’m finishing the Long Awakening by Lindsey O’Connor, the amazing story of her coma and life afterwards. I want to read your By The Light of the Silvery Moon after reading your recent blog about the Titanic.

I read Table….and loved it!!! Can’t wait for the next one. The Book Thief is definitely on my list. I started it during school, then had to return it to the library as the year was ending. So, would be great to get my hands on that one. And the rest would fill the summer for me until I can get back into the library at school.

Thanks for the giveaway and for sharing your picks.

so many books, so little time…. the recommendations from your friends sound amazing. The Book Thief has been beckoning me…but I really don’t think I can handle a tearjerker etc at the moment. The Restoration (about the abandoned church ) sounds like it would be a good read as well. My ‘already own/on my stack” are Mercy Like Sunlight-liz curtis higgs, ‘The Half-Stitched Amish quilt club” (yes I know it’s not a new book), have several Dave and neta Jackson books that are waiting for me. ‘Surprised by Motherhood ‘ is on that stack as well.
and your giveaway batch…what I don’t read i’m sure my daughters will pick up.
