I’ve gone a little overboard with toy shopping this year . . . but with good reason.
First of all, I wasn’t supposed to do much toy shopping to begin with. You see, we’re taking all of our kids—from our married son and his family, to our little preschoolers—to Disneyworld in January. That was supposed to be our present to everyone, and my thought was we’d spend money there and then just have one or two simple gifts under the tree.
Well, there are more than one or two gifts under there. There are like fifteen . . . for each of my little kids ages six, three, and three. How did things get so crazy? Mostly because my heart is full of thankfulness for our two new additions. We adopted Bella (six) and Casey (three) from the foster care system this year. This is our first Christmas with them.
This is their first Christmas with us.
Their first Christmas with a mom and dad.
Their first Christmas with peace and stability.
Their first Christmas where they won’t have to worry where they will sleep, if there is food on the table, or if tomorrow they’ll have to be moved to a new house.
In the six months before we brought our children home, they were loved on and cared for by many loving people—foster moms and dads who shared Jesus with them, who loved them, and who cared for them in so many ways. But this is the first Christmas with our family. Their forever family. And I just got a little carried away wanting to celebrate that. I want to do so much for them. I want to express my love in so many ways . . . and sometimes that includes overpriced plastic trinkets that spin around, flash colors, and play happy tunes.
I was thinking about all these things as I looked at the Christmas tree with the wrapped gifts piled beneath it, and I heard the gentlest whisper to my heart from my Lord. I felt Him saying, “Now do you understand how much I long to give you my good gifts?”
