I found God.

As a mom I have found God in surprising places. I found Him as I sat on the couch cuddling with my three-year-old and reading Goodnight Moon for the 2,345th time. He spoke to me as I made dinner and even as I stuffed laundry into rickety dresser drawers.

I heard Him in the midst of my untidy, desperately-in-need-of-a-reorg life. I found God, experienced Him… well… while mixing Kool-Aid and playing with play dough. In my way of thinking, the most devoted people are moms who whisper prayers for their neighbor, their friend, and their brother (who’s messing up yet again) while watching their kids play in the sandbox. Moms who try to read their Bibles while Dora the Explorer is blaring on the TV in the next room. Moms who stop to talk with an elderly man at the grocery store about the creamed corn, not because they even like creamed corn, but because they want to show a lonely person the love of Jesus.

I find God when I am trying to squeeze in a work out…I hate excercise, but when I am on the treadmill with a prayer list, I find it goes so much faster. And God often speaks to me there! I’m glad he can redeem even the most annoying of disciplines!

As a mother, I didn’t find enough time for God but as a grandmother God is in every moment of my day, and I’m aware of Him as never before. I pray for my children to find time for God also in their busy lives.

He whispers to me while my hands are deep in hot suds or while I am cleaning my toilets. I find Him when I go hunting in the brown of winter, and beneath a rock I spy small green hints of a spring yet to come and in our lives He is always present when the tears fall. I try to spend whatever time I can with Him, but not always when I want to spend time with Him. I talk to Him on the way to work in the car and on my walks at lunch.

I find God in the shower, washing dishes, vacuuming, or watching my children reenact the world as they see it (this usually involves convictions!)

Thank you for the encouraging words–the grace towards mothers of young children…hmmm… sounds like a good name for a support group. 😉

I find God in ripples of laughter as I talk with my family at the dinner table; when I see squirrels chasing each other up a tree; when I watch the stray cat moseying its way through our backyard always alert and on the prowl; and in a good devotional in my email.

I find him in the utter delight over the small things. In the passionate hugs and kisses. In the nightime snuggles. In the excitement when Daddy and Miracle (my girl) re-unite every night after he’s been at work.

Great post. I’ll probably link to it in my Saturday “around the blogosphere” post. 🙂
