Earlier this month I announced the “My Favorite Memory” contest and asked you to send in your favorite childhood memories to be entered to win 1 of 10 copies of my new book Sweet September!
Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting those entries. What a treat it has been to read your stories!
We had a huge back yard and for as long as I could remember, I looked forward to the storms and rain and this is probablly one of the reasons why the story below is a happy memory for me.
Every time it rained these huge puddles would form and within a few days tadpoles would start showing up, so I would go and get my brand new lunchbox and would fill it up with that nasty, dirty water and gather as many tadpoles as I could, except the big ugly ones, ewwww… And would watch them move around and occassionally play with them in my hands. I was probably around five-years-old.
Afterward, I would literally jump in these puddles til I was covered from top to bottom in mud, the only thing you could see of me was the white of my eyes, lol! I still get a kick out that.
Anyhow, my mom, never scolded me for always getting muddy and she never quite figured out what kept on happening to all of my lunchboxes! But, she always bought me a new one. She figured I was doing something creative with them and never felt the need to question me about them. Thanks mom!
Just a few months ago, I fessed up and told her about the tadpoles and she laughed and said, “I always wondered what you did with them.”
I can still see that happy, care-free little girl romping in the mud and not
having a care in the world.
Contest ended August 31st. The winners will be announced September 5th!
