Earlier this month I announced the “My Favorite Memory” contest and asked you to send in your favorite childhood memories to be entered to win 1 of 10 copies of my new book Sweet September!
Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting those entries. What a treat it has been to read your stories!
My favorite childhood involves a time I got to take a special shopping trip with my mother. She recently passed away and I have thought of this event often over the years but even more so throughout the recent weeks since my mother’s death. I was about 8 yrs old and I was chosen to compete in the “county-wide” declam tournament. I was going to compete in the poetry reading contest. I actually got first place in the contest but that was not what the event my favorite memory by any means. Instead it was special because my mother surprised me with taking me on a special shopping trip about a week before the contest. We were a very poor family and dressed mostly in hand-me-downs. But suddenly I was getting to go shopping all by myself with my mother to get my first bran-new dress. There were no annoying brothers going along. Thank heavens! The older ones teased me relentously and the younger one was so sweet that I was over shadowed by him. So this event was indeed a unique event in our family-one of us getting to go shopping for something brand-new and all alone with our mother. Wow! I do not even remember what the dress looked like. What was most special about this memory is the time I got to spend all alone with my mother. We talked and she bought me my very first footlong hotdog at the local drive-in and helped me get a dress for the contest. Over the years one of my favorite times has continued to be when I got to spend time alone with my mother. And now that she is gone, I will ever treasure this special memory.
Contest ended August 31st. The winners will be announced September 5th!
