Earlier this month I announced the “My Favorite Memory” contest and asked you to send in your favorite childhood memories to be entered to win 1 of 10 copies of my new book Sweet September!
Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting those entries. What a treat it has been to read your stories!
Winter:
My favorite childhood memories are of the family reunions every three summers. My grandmother’s side of the family would gather in a small cow pasture behind my parents home. For three days we lived like pioneers on the range. Everything was cooked over a hickory fire, we ate homemade ice cream and roasted pork. We played volleyball–some years mud volleyball, climbed the old coal mine hills, explored the timber surrounding the pastures, and pinching our noses as we used the outhouse. One afternoon, those who wanted, would gather at the local river and canoe from one small village to the next. Camping out under the stars, sweating buckets as we played in the warm sweet grass, gathered around the campfire listening to the stories the older generation told, singing campfire songs, and seeing family we had only heard about was always the best summer for me as a kid.
Makes me wish things hadn’t changed.
It’s not too late…Submit your own favorite childhood memory here and be entered to win 1 of 10 copies of Sweet September!
Contest ends August 31st. The winners will be announced September 5th!
