My writing space is a secret room accessed through a tiny door in the back of my youngest son’s closet, then into our attic, then into the room.
Our home was built in the late eighties when the style was to have a tall elevator-like shaft in the entry way with a chandelier hanging down. For years I looked at the space and said, “What a waste. All you’d have to do to create a cool secret room would be put in a floor.” So seven years ago I did.
The black leather chair you see in the shot was brought up when the floor was half done. (Nope, it’s never coming out.) The window lets me look out on the beauty of the northwest across the street and lets natural light in. The sword is a replica of Aragorn’s sword from Lord of the Rings.
The room is filled with bookshelves and books, a few mementos and that’s all there’s space for. I write on my laptop so there’s no need for a desk.
SOUL’S GATE is my fourth novel and I’m so pumped about this one.
What if you could send your spirit into other people’s souls to fight for their freedom? That’s the premise of SOUL’S GATE and here’s what a few people are saying about the book:
Ted Dekker: “Powerful writing. A deep and mystical journey that will leaving you thinking long after you finish the book.”
Publisher’s Weekly: “Readers with high blood pressure or heart conditions be warned: this is a seriously heart-thumping and satisfying read that goes to the edge, jumps off, and “builds wings on the way down.”
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you, Tricia is the one who discovered me way back in the spring of 2006. Love ya, Tricia!

That is so fun. And it’s a great book!
Jim! Best. Room. Ever. Although you could’ve used the space for a climbing wall… 😉
This gives me ideas about my own two story entry way! It’s like a tree house! It really looks like you – and I think I recognize a little something on the shelf. Can’t wait to read Soul’s Gate. Thanks for sharing.
Tricia – this has been a fun series of posts to read. I love seeing other author’s writing spaces.
Yes, Jaime, could have been a GREAT climbing wall! Ha!
Love ya, Cara.
Get to work on your room, Jan!
What a fun post, Jim! Love the photos and the story behind your writing space. Judy Christie
I started reading Soul’s Gate last night. Had to pry the Kindle from my white-knuckled fingers so I could go to bed. Woo Hoo!
Ahh, I couldn’t think of a better place for inspiration. A secret room with the great elven sword Andúril leaning against the wall…My “Ring would look good in there too…http://bluegrassbirdie.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Lord%20of%20the%20Rings
It is beautiful decorated, Jim. Did you get any help with that?!
How cool is that! You just need a brass fire pole for quick exits back to the normal world. Just bought the B&N special edition of Soul’s Gate. Don’t want to miss out on the extra chapters.
A secret writing room? I think that has just become my new someday goal. I’ve always wanted a secret room! When I was a kid I was convinced that part of the underground railroad ran behind my house, under a berm between the backyard and the train tracks. Never mind that I lived in Canada and the Underground Railroad wasn’t technically made up of tunnels.
