My Writing Desk | Jody Hedlund

Recently I had to give up my office in order to make room for my kids to have extra bedroom space. After much hauling and rearranging, I finally took over a little window spot in the master bedroom. Although it’s not much to speak of, it does provide a quiet retreat for writing when I can get away from the busy activities of my large family.

I have my handy laptop, research books, a vase of dried roses (from a bouquet my husband once gave me), and my Yankee candles (white gardenia scent which is like a breath of fresh air!). I love being able to see out into our backyard, which is wooded and peaceful. And the sun shines in and lights up the room.

Even if it’s not the perfect office, it’s still a lovely, quiet place to write. What’s even better is that the door locks. So when I really need to work without interruptions, I can lock myself in and mostly keep the kids out!

Jody Hedlund is an award-winning author of inspirational historical romances, including the best-selling historical, The Preacher’s Bride.

As a busy mama-writer, she has the wonderful privilege of teaching her crew of five children at home. In between grading math papers and giving spelling tests, she occasionally does a load of laundry and washes dishes. When she’s not busy being a mama, you can find her in front of her laptop. Sometimes her family thinks her fingers are super-glued to the keyboard, but in reality she usually finds her writing time in the wee hours of the morning and then for a couple of hours in the afternoon when done with school. She views writing as God’s gift to her–a creative outlet that helps bring fresh energy to her parenting.

She’s living testimony that amidst the crazy chaos of running a large family, it’s still possible to squeeze in time for writing and fulfill the dream of publication. She chronicles both the joys and difficulties of her journey toward publication on her blog. Visit her website to learn more about Jody, or connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

Jody is giving away a copy of her latest book, Unending Devotion. Enter using the Rafflecopter widget below. Only those in the continental U.S. are eligible to win.

    Oh Jody,
It’s fun to see where you write. My husband has been so sweet to keep sending me links to writing desks b/c I think he’s planning the same thing for us–to create a little nook in our bedroom.
    Love your view!

I love the view of the tree out your window–how pretty! Green sings to my soul! I’m sure it must have been difficult to give up your writing space, but your new desk area is very inviting. 🙂

Thank you, ladies! Yes, it’s just a small space for this point in my life. But I don’t need much! In fact, we often need much less than we think we do, don’t we? 🙂

Great view! And I particularly like your bio. It tells us about you personally, not just a list of accomplishments, without being weird or cutesy.

I think that’s a really nice writing spot! You get to see out the window, which is nice though I imagine it could get cold in the winter!

You have a lovely view out your window! Trees are so beautiful, especially when their colors begin to change.

What a beautiful space to write! I love how clean it is! Our desk in the living room with the laptop is currently piled with junk (most of it my husbands), and our desk in the basement (with a too-slow computer) is currently piled with my junk. Not very relaxing.

I’ve read some of Jody’s books in the past, and have thoroughly enjoyed every one. I would love to win a copy of Unending Devotion since it is based in Michigan, and I’ve been a resident of West Michigan all my life. Thank you so much for offering this giveaway!

I was wondering, now that it has been almost a year since you moved your writing area, how do you like it? Did you keep it there? I keep moving mine around since I do not have an office. My husband gets his because he is a real MAC Nerd, writes a magazine, newsletter, on-line meetings, etc. During the winter I love to have my desktop in the FM near the wood stove, but I moved to the front room this summer. I thought about bedroom, but it is cold in there in the winter. I have a new MAC Air, but I mostly have my stuff on my IMAC. Just wondering….Mary in Idaho
