I usually do my writing at a wonderful little coffee shop in my hometown. Here’s my “office” with my Fez green tea, my laptop, a stack of research books, and a binder for my chapter outline and character synopses.

Melanie Dobson is the award-winning author of nine historical, suspense, and romance novels including Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana, The Silent Order, and Refuge on Crescent Hill.
Melanie has been writing fiction since her first attempt to write a mystery when she was in middle school. Her first novel (Together for Good) was published in 2006—a story inspired by the adoption of her oldest daughter.
“My desire,” she says, “is that the stories God has etched in my heart will give readers a glimpse of His love and grace even when they don’t understand His plan.”
Melanie and her husband, Jon, have two daughters. After moving numerous times, the Dobson family has finally settled near Portland, Oregon, and they love to travel and hike both in the mountains and the cliffs above the Pacific. When Melanie isn’t writing, she enjoys exploring ghost towns and dusty back roads, line dancing, and reading stories with her kids.
I know several writers who write a coffee shops. I always wanted to try that but was afraid I would be too distracted by people watching and the noise. How does that work for you? I might have to just venture out!
I love Melanie and her books! I find it so interesting how some authors can write in “public” and others can’t. In general I like quiet and privacy, but the few times I’ve written at Panera or Starbucks were oddly productive. I didn’t log on to the internet and didn’t have any other distractions – so I HAD to write. Maybe I should do that more often 🙂
I’m on of those odd people who can’t write when it’s quiet. 🙂 Every little noise distracts me when I’m alone and every sort of odd job also distracts me when I try to work at home. So the buzz of a coffee shop helps me stay focused on my book (not to mention the free refills of green tea).
