My favorite Valentine’s Day experience was two years ago. My husband told me that instead of going out he was going to do something special. He said I had to wait upstairs, and he’d come and get me when he was ready. From the sounds of pots banging and the scents coming up the stairs, I knew he was cooking for me. An hour later I was called downstairs to find a beautiful dinner … and my three pre-teens dressed about and acting as our wait staff and our entertainment! It was a great evening and one I’ll never forget!
Now it’s your turn. What was your favorite Valentine’s memory?!
Whoever submits my favorite story (as chosen by me) will receive some yummy chocolate!
We don’t do alot for Valentine’s day, but have a silly tradition of going to Dairy Queen all by ourselves and eating some ice cream and then going to the mall to check out the clearance racks! I know that is not much of a story! My best memories of Valentines was getting a valentine from my great-grandfather every year, carefully hand written with a $2 bill stuck inside. I saved the last one he sent me when I was 18, right before he died. He was one of my best friends, a wonderful man, who was alot of fun to “hang out” with! I hope when I am old I can be like “Meemo and Unkie” as we called them!
Several years ago, before I became a SAHM, I worked as a teacher’s assistant in a second grade classroom. The students were either children with learning disabilities or behavior disorders. I worked mainly with N. He had become epileptic when he fell out of a grocery cart as a toddler. He would try his best to use his illness as a ploy to get out of his schoolwork!
I knew he was there to learn. Many days N. and I would go round and round! The day came around for the traditional school “Valentine’s Day” party. I knew better than to expect a card from him. When he walked into the classroom, he nervously came right to me. He stretched out his hand and handed me a card. It was signed with the best signature he was capable of!
Neil passed away in his teens from a brain surgery gone wrong. I still have his card…..Cindi

We don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day (too commercial), but several years ago we each found Valentine’s cards that we loved, so we exchange them (again) each year. A few years ago, though, my husband surprised me with a rather large check for an unusual amount. He had figured out that I was a Stitch (married name) longer than I was a Shipley (maiden name), so he gave me one dollar for each day I had been a Stitch so I could redecorate the house (something I’d been wanting to do for a few years). I think about his gift every time I look around the house!
When I was a child, my mother always gave us gifts on Valentine’s Day. Usually she would buy those plastic hearts, with M&M’s in them, at Sharon’s store and they would be on the kitchen table waiting for us on Valentine’s morning. I remember how I would always savor each one, placing it in my mouth and holding it there until the sugar coating and the milk chocolate melted away. With the clear plastic lid on the heart, I could see exactly how many M&M’s I had left and I wanted to enjoy every single one. After I learned to read, my mother started buying books and leaving them with the little plastic heart. One more than one occasion, I remember reading a book while sucking the sugar coating off M&M’s.
My favorite Valentine’s memory is a little unconventional since it doesn’t involve my husband. One year my hubby had to work and my best friend’s husband had to work so Best Friend and I got together, had dinner and went to the movie. I guess you could say I had a date with my best friend. We had fun and laughed which is good because at the time we were at home all day long with young children. Whenever we got together our children were always with us. Five young children can get to you at times so it was nice to spend time with Best Friend without the kiddos.
Last year, just before Valentine’s Day, we were to meet our deacon to discuss wedding plans. My fiance got into his suit and told me to put on something nice. I was a bit suspicious about why we were dressing up to meet the deacon. He also warned me we’d have to leave at a certain time, because the deacon had other things to do. After our dinner and talk, I found a card on the car seat… with tickets inside to a Barenaked Ladies concert. I’d never heard them before, so I thought it was all right. When we got there, the opening act was Tomi Swick, and he sang “A Night Like This” – the song that my fiance played before he proposed to me and that was our first dance song at the wedding. We were probably the only people at the concert who were there for the opening act more than the main show!
My most cherished Valentine’s Day was when I was a little girl, I think I was eight or nine.
My precious mother was raising three little girls all on her own and working as a housekeeper. She worked very hard to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads, we didn’t have much in terms of toys but we were happy.
She never complained when she went without, as long as we had what we needed. We never knew how hard it was for her financially or physically, until we were all adults. My mom has/had a debilitating disease.
One very early morning, my sisters and I woke up and found brand new outfits for each of us hanging on our bedroom door! And a small thing of chocolates!
You cannot imagine the joy we felt when we saw them! We jumped out of our beds, devoured the chocolate, well I did anyway, and immediately put on our new clothes.
We ran to her room and all tackled her on her bed, waking her up of course, and gave her many hugs and kisses.
That was the best Valentine’s Day ever!
