You would think that, as a writer, I’d be reading all the time. But when I’m in a drafting or rewriting phase on one of my old books, I’m so exhausted from words at the end of the day that all I really want to do is watch some mindless TV and go to sleep. That means I read in fits and torrents, devouring multiple books in a week and then going long stretches at a time without reading anything. While January was a light month (only three read . . . the shame!) February is shaping up to be a big reading month, simply because I haven’t learned to pace myself when checking things out of the library! So. Many. Good. Books.
What was your favorite book as a child?
That depended on the week. It could have been any book in the Baby-Sitters Club, Satin Slippers, Sweet Valley Twins, or Nancy Drew series. But the one that made the most impact on me and turned me into a “real” reader was The Secret Garden. I still remember when my fourth-grade teacher handed it to me because she thought I’d like it, and the little gold heart bookmark I used to mark my page is etched in my memory. There were other favorites later on, but that one will always be the most important.
What book did you read that first made you want to be an author?
I honestly don’t know! I’ve wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember, writing stories as early as five or six years old. I suspect the fact that my mom read books to me every day, all the time, had something to do with the fact that books came to mean love. And who doesn’t want to say they work with love for a living?
What was the last book you read just for fun?
The last book I finished was The Martian by Andy Weir. I’ve meant to read it since it came out, especially since I loved the movie, but I just haven’t gotten around to it. It was not only enjoyable, but it gave me a real appreciation for the herculean task of adapting it for the screen.
What books are currently on your nightstand?
The Lost Castle, Kristy Cambron
Under A Cloudless Sky, Chris Fabry
Standard Deviation, Katherine Heiny
The Masterpiece, Francine Rivers
The Firebird, Susanna Kearsley
Out of the Ordinary, Jen Turano
Clearly I don’t have a favorite genre—my reading material is all over the place. I just took back a stack to the library that included women’s fiction, suspense, and a bunch of cookbooks!
What upcoming release are you most looking forward to?
Things I Never Told You by Beth K. Vogt in May 2018. I had the privilege of endorsing this one, and I’m looking forward to having a finished copy in my hands so I can read it again. I can’t wait until everyone else reads it so we can talk about it! Book club at my place!
More about The Saturday Night Supper Club
Denver chef Rachel Bishop has accomplished everything she’s dreamed and some things she never dared hope, like winning a James Beard award and heading up her own fine-dining restaurant. But when a targeted smear campaign causes her to be pushed out of the business by her partners, she vows to do whatever it takes to get her life back . . . even if that means joining forces with the man who inadvertently set the disaster in motion.
Essayist Alex Kanin never imagined his pointed editorial would go viral. Ironically, his attempt to highlight the pitfalls of online criticism has the opposite effect: it revives his own flagging career by destroying that of a perfect stranger. Plagued by guilt-fueled writer’s block, Alex vows to do whatever he can to repair the damage. He just doesn’t expect his interest in the beautiful chef to turn personal.
Alex agrees to help rebuild Rachel’s tarnished image by offering his connections and his home to host an exclusive pop-up dinner party targeted to Denver’s most influential citizens: the Saturday Night Supper Club. As they work together to make the project a success, Rachel begins to realize Alex is not the unfeeling opportunist she once thought he was, and that perhaps there’s life—and love—outside the pressure cooker of her chosen career. But can she give up her lifelong goals without losing her identity as well?
