Kids are on to something and grownup are just starting to catch on … the joy of coloring! Adult-geared coloring books have been flying off the shelves lately. Why, you ask? Beside being an enjoyable way to take a break, coloring has numerous health benefits. According to this article by FoxNews:
Doctors have known about these benefits since the early 1900s. Psychiatrist Carl Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, prescribed coloring to his patients to calm and center their minds. Doctors today continue to follow Jung’s lead and still recommend the activity to combat anxiety.
The fact that coloring is structured activates the logic part of the brain, and generates a creative mindset, said New York-based clinical psychologist Dr. Ben Michaelis.
I may not be a doctor of psychology, but I am a mom and have a few reasons of my own why I think coloring this great for you:
- We all need a break: Coloring can be an outlet to rest and unwind from life’s stressors.
- Quality time with your kids: Instead of throwing paper and pencils at your kids to distract them while you clean the kitchen or do laundry, join your kids! They’ll appreciate spending time with you and you will, too.
- Stimulate your creativity: Between dirty diapers, cleaning dishes, and preparing food, it’s easy to lose touch with your creative side. Coloring can help you get your creative juices flowing again.
- Enhance your quiet time: While you’re coloring, spend time praying to your Heavenly Father or meditating on a particular verse
