Writer’s Desk with Kim D. Taylor

Kim believes that “every place has a story” and enjoys bringing a story to life that weaves in and out of history and takes her readers to a beautiful place. She brings nearly twelve years of real estate experience along with fifteen years as a pastor’s wife to her writing career. Her business and ministry experience add creativity as well as a sense of reality to her writing.
She has a spirited determination and commitment to excellence in the world of writing and values antiquity, authenticity, family, and fun. Kim has been married for twenty-three years and has two incredible sons.

Q&A with Kim D. Taylor
Do you have a writing routine? When/Where do you write?
I don’t have a writing routine. I have a full-time at-home job and homeschool two high schoolers, so life is a bit hectic at times. I write when I can. Last summer, as a homeschool project, our boys built me an outdoor studio office. It is classy and cozy with a sofa and fireplace. The perfect spot to write.
When are you most productive?
I try to start writing in the mornings before I do anything else. If I work, clean, pay bills, work on school or two of our other businesses, creativity is zapped. It is hard to write with financial/business matters on your mind.
What do you snack on or drink while writing?
Popcorn and San Pellegrino w/lime.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
I start an exciting scene even if it has nothing to do with the scene that I am supposed to be writing. Something like, “She had a gun.”
What is your outlining process? Are you a pantser/plotter or something in between?
I am a sticky-note plotter & pantser. I have a big wall in the studio. I use different colored sticky notes to mark characters and scenes. I like a story idea penciled out but don’t mind a few surprise scenes that mess things up a bit.
Best advice for someone who is just starting out.
I only have my experience to use, but I suppose I would encourage them to write the story in their head/heart in 30 days and 300 pages, forget format or style or rules. Write first, learn next, then rewrite.
Quickfire questions — what are you currently:
Binge-watching: Alias is my favorite tv show. I binge watch every few years.
Reading: My favorite book of all time is called, Not My Will, by Francia Arnold (pub.1946).
Favorite song right now: My favorite song right now is by For King and Country, entitled God Only Knows.
Starbucks drink: My drink of choice is a Tall Chestnut Praline Latte at Starbucks, nothing else compares. I am a tea drinker too and love Earl Grey from the Queen Mary Tearoom in Seattle, Wa.
Weird things about me: I have 27 dish sets that we use on a regular basis. I am a gourmet cook and don’t follow recipes, so we’ve had some interesting meals at times. I live in a 1907 home but my style is mid-century modern. I have over 2500 items for sale on eBay. I have naturally curly hair but I straighten it most days. I am 45 and still wear pigtails. I was offered a job at Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club as a teen and turned it down to go into full-time church ministry.
