Julia Child once said, “No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing.” If this is true my young girls are going to be GREAT cooks. Nearly every day I hear, “Mommy can we cook/bake something?” And often I say, “Yes!”
Do your kids love to cook? Do they want to watch you in the kitchen? If you answered YES! then your kids are on track for an awesome life.
Why?
1. Cooking with kids makes them smarter.
They use math and reading skills. They learn about nutrition and food science. They have a chance to be creative! And they also gain confidence about their skills.
2. Cooking with kids creates fun memories.
What could be better than spending time with mom or dad and getting a delicious treat at the end? The more one-on-one interaction kids have with parents, the more opportunities there are for those relationships to grow and deepen.
3. Cooking with kids prepares them for life.
My daughter Leslie (23) liked to help me in the kitchen when she was younger, and now she’s a great cook. She’s a missionary in the Czech Republic, and she cooks and bakes for Bible Studies and small groups. (One man who has become a great friend admitted that he first came to the group for the food.) Her skills have truly turned into a “kitchen ministry.”
4. Kids who cook eat healthier.
When kids cook, they try new things and they begin to understand the farm-to-table. Many children today have lost touch with where food comes from. But when children help to shop and prepare foods they build a bridge into healthy living and a healthy understand about the environment and food production.
If you kids enjoy cooking or making, make time to cook with them. And if you’re looking for a great resource to make cooking easier, I have a great product for you!
For Kids Who Love to Cook
Even though it takes more time, I enjoy teaching my kids to cook.
Last year I bought this book, Twist It Up: More Than 60 Delicious Recipes from an Inspiring Young Chef
My kids liked it, and food was GREAT … but since they don’t read well it was hard for them to follow the recipes. When cooking together, I usually have to read and re-read each recipe. I also found that when choosing recipes my kids would ONLY pick the recipes that had photos shown in the cookbooks. My kids wanted to SEE what they were going to make before they made it.
Then, this July I was at a homeschooling conference when my friend gushed about a new cooking club that she just signed up for. Once I looked at it, I knew I wanted this for my kids!
Meet Raddish
Raddish monthly kits are a great way to cook with kids. Each box includes three recipe booklets with illustrated instructions, one skill card, a creative activity, a shopping list, and a related iron-on patch for your child’s Raddish apron. (The apron is free with a subscription and $15 sold individually.) There are also Table Talk questions to guide your discussion as you cook.
The recipe booklets are on laminated tri-fold sheets, so they clean up easy if spilled on. My kids (ages 8, 5, and 4-years-old) loved to “see” their progress as we walked through each step.
We made Scramble Superheroes, and they were super easy and delicious. I have no doubt we will cook them again. We also decorated a pot holder with our family crest.
Raddish Kids boxes can be ordered individually ($24), or in three, six, or twelve-month subscriptions ($24/month, $22/month, $20/month). For an extra charge, additional materials can be added for extra children. Each box also comes with a small piece of equipment, like a set of measuring spoons or a pot holder.
My kids LOVE Raddish and we’re going to work on our second recipe booklet today. I don’t mind though … there are great benefits to cooking with kids … and mom gets tasty treats!
