As a mom of ten children officially, and a few more unofficially, Mother’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. (Foot rubs, flowers and hand-drawn cards are the best!) I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for both the children I raised and the mother and grandmother who raised me. But my heart also warms to other women who have impacted my life.
One of those women is Margo. She was my Sunday School teacher from the 3rd-6th grade. Margo not only taught me stories and songs, she included me in her life. Once, when I earned enough stars on the memory chart, she took me out to dinner. Another time we picked cherries together and we talked about school and friends. Margo had no children of her own, but she mothered me beautifully. She made me feel loved and valued. Because of her devotion my life was changed. She is a true hero in my book.
Today I’m thankful for my children who made me a mother. I’m thankful for my mother and my grandmother, too. But I also urge each of us to take time to honor other special women in our lives, many who have no children of their own. They truly are heroes too!
