This week on #WalkItOut we are chatting with novelist, Jaime Jo Wright. When I first started writing, I saw myself as a fiction writer. While my writing has expanded since then, I do still love reading (and writing) novels.

I loved connecting with Jaime Jo. She’s a Christy Award-winning author of The House on Foster Hill. She’s also a human resource director in Wisconsin, but one of the coolest things you’ll love to hear — she was homeschooled! I had so much fun with this interview! Even though we’re friends online and we chat back and forth, I really learned some things that I hadn’t already known about her before — like how she sent a manuscript to a publishing house when she was just fifteen years old! But mostly, I just love how she shares her heart through the pages of a story and how she is able to share about God’s goodness in her pages.

Today on Walk It Out, I’m excited to be chatting with Brian Dixon, author of the new book Start with Your People. I love his idea that there are already people around you who believe you in, who need to hear your message, and who want to support you … and who you need to support.

This is important message, especially to those in the publishing world because we authors hear that we need to grow our audience. We need to work toward book sales. We need to strive for pre-release sales and grow our social media. We often forget about the people. Those are PEOPLE who are buying our books and who need to hear our message. Sometimes I think we are so focused on the numbers that we forget the people behind the numbers.

It makes me think of when I went to high school. I went to a little school called Weed High—yes, it’s a real place—that had a cheerleading team. When I tried out for the team, I’m going to be honest, it was all about me. I wasn’t trying out to be a cheerleader because I wanted to support the basketball team and the football team. I wanted to wear that uniform. I wanted to travel on the bus and hang out with all the cute football players—it was about me.

There are so many times in life when it’s like that! We are thinking about ourselves. We think about our plans and our goals, our book, our podcast, and the list just keeps going. It’s all about how we look. How we present ourselves.

I love that the message in Brian’s book: when we think about others first, they benefit and we do too. It’s about cheering but cheering for the team … not worrying about how good we look.

I love how Brian is always cheering on those around him. His Instagram is always filled with short videos where he gives advice. It’s so helpful, and it’s great to know there’s someone out there who isn’t worried about making himself look good, but who wants to help you serve others better.

Where have you found beauty today? To be truthful, I have been in the house all day. I’m a homeschooling mom and have been homeschooling all morning. I’ve snuck away this afternoon to get recording time, and for me, beauty was found this morning when I was headed down the street taking my dog for a walk. There were bunnies running around the neighborhood, the air was cool, the weather perfect, there’s flowers that my husband planted on the front porch — that was a beautiful moment. But then later in the day, I was sitting at the breakfast nook at the table that has been torn up with use watching my twelve-year-old daughter work on her grammar workbook and I thought, this is beauty. This is a beautiful moment.

I think so many times in life we forget to pause and enjoy the beauty around us. There was beauty when I was cutting up bell peppers for the chili that I’m making tonight. As I’m looking at this bell pepper that I probably bought for ninty-nine cents, the beauty of the bell pepper. Just realizing that all around is beauty.

We’re going to be talking about discovering the beauty around us today with my guest, Ruth Chou Simons. Ruth and I have known each other for a while, and I have been a fan of her art for forever. She creates beautiful pieces of artwork, stationery, and a new planner. She really captures the beauty all around and is able to put it in print for us to enjoy as well. As we chat today, you’ll learn how to be able to look around you and see the beauty in your everyday life, and to be able to see God at work in that beauty.

What comes to mind when you hear the words “empty nest”? I have to admit, John and I are at a stage where we still have little kids at home, we have teenagers, we have young adult, and adult kids. I’m like “empty nest”? Yes, please! I just want to sleep in! But I’ve been there before. I know how hard it is to launch kids. Empty nest means transition. Empty nest can mean loss. It can mean so many things. Sometimes we worry about losing the relationship we have with our kids. During this time I have with my kids, I don’t want to have to think about the challenges that comes with an empty nest. There are challenges with an empty nest, and sometimes it’s with our minds and our hearts.

Today guest, Jill Savage, and I talk about all these things on toady’s episode. I know you are just going to love Jill. She has been doing Hearts at Home conferences for many years. She has written so many great books, and I’m so excited that she has written Empty Nest, Full Life. She shares the insights she has on an empty nest. Okay, how are you about making new friends? I may seem very outgoing and warm and bubbly, but the truth is if I’m in a group, I’m going to be the one hanging back. I want to be the one watching — I’m not the life of the party.

But what I love is spotting someone that I want to get to know. I love sitting down face-to-face for coffee, which I don’t get to do as often as I’d like. I love hearing someone’s heart. I love hearing about what God is doing in a new friend, what God is teaching her– -her passions and desires.

When I had the opportunity to hear more about Jennifer Camp, that’s what it was like for me. I had not heard of her before, which is pretty amazing because I know a lot of writers and speakers. When I heard what she’s doing with Gather Ministries, I knew it someone I wanted to lean into. I wanted to hear what is on her heart. I was so blown away by today’s interview. It was the first time Jennifer and I talked and after we stopped recording we continued to talk because she was so genuine.

As you will see in Jennifer’s journey, this is nothing she ever planned. This is nothing she aspired to. Sharing all that God was doing in her and through her it really was that step of faith to trust that God was calling her to this. I know that you’re going to love this conversation because I loved it.

Recently the question was posed, “If you could hire someone fulltime to help you at your house, who would you hire? A maid, a cook, a chauffeur, personal shopper?” I have eleven people in my house, a maid would definitely be my first choice! That would be amazing. But the thing I have learned, even if you have a housekeeper come in and clean all day (which I have) by an hour later it will be a mess again if we don’t address the clutter. If we don’t dig into the deeper issue — why do we let stuff pile up? Why do we let ourselves become overwhelmed?

I am so thankful for my friend Kristi Clover, author of book M.O.M: Master Organizer of Mayhem. We get chatting and giggly in this episode because I am blessed to be able to call Kristi one of my best friends. And the thing about Kristi is that she knows how to get organized! She always has a plan and system when we travel together for conferences. She has been such an encourager to be to go through and work on my clutter and mess.

How does God redesign a life? That’s what we talk about today on Walk it Out with our guest, and my real-life friend, Tracy Steel.

Before we jump into this amazing conversation, I want to take a minute to talk about what it means to have a redesigned life. As you know if you’ve been listening to the podcast, or visited my blog, I was a teen mom. I prayed for a future husband, and God gave me John. We had two more kids and God was really redesigning my life right there. From the moment I said “here I am, take me,” God gave me hope. Fast forward about four years, I was pregnant with my third when God gave me the desire to write. That year, at eight and a half months pregnant, I went to the Mt. Hermon Writer’s Conference. I wanted to be a Christian writer, and write all the things. I met so many great people there that really encouraged me to keep going. So many people poured into me.

I was thinking about that today when I was thinking about my friend Tracy. A Redesigned Life: Uncovering God’s Purpose When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned is her first book! Tracy, as you will hear, is a wife to an Air Force pilot who now works in the Pentagon. She’s a mom to two kids — and you are going to love the fun story of how we met. The fun thing is when I met Tracy, I saw that sparkle in her. I saw that she had a message, that she loved people, and that God was doing something with her. Over the years, as we got busy, whenever we would connect I would ask her about her book, about what she was going to do. And I’m not the only one! Tracy has an amazing network of friends who encouraged her on this journey.

So many times I think we hear other peoples dreams and we push them to the side, but I really think we should be cheerleaders. I want you to think about someone today that you can step forward, that you can encourage, that you can say I can see God is designing something in your life and I want to be a part of that! You never know how that is going to turn out!

In the month of May in the year 2000, I was with some friends. We were on a research trip in Europe and stumbled across a concentration camp. I really did not want to go look at that camp. I thought we need to go to a museum or a Mozart search or do something exciting like that! But … we went to the camp and the reality of what had been going on during World War II really hit me. It became real when I saw those tall walls and barbed wire. When I saw the cabins that held the hundreds and hundreds of prisoners. When I saw the ovens where so many lives were lost.

World War II was no longer something I learned about in my history books. Instead, it became so real to me. I think that it is so important that we teach others our history. We do that a lot through non-fiction, but I love when it can be done through fiction. I’m excited that today’s guest, Amanda Barratt, was able to share history in her new novel My Dearest Dietrich.

I don’t even know how to put it in words how much it means to me what Nancy Alcorn is doing in the world right now. Nancy’s heart for teen moms is so amazing, and if you know me at all, you know that teen moms are a huge passion of mine. I love working with teen moms. I love our weekly support group, and I love being able to tell a young mom that “You Matter.” When we help a mom, we are helping her child too.

We’re going to be chatting today about Nancy’s new book Treatment or Transformation: 13 Stories Real Stories Why You Can’t Argue with a Changed Life. We also chat a little about how Nancy started Mercy Ministries (what now is called Mercy Multiplied) — a free of charge, biblically-based residential program for troubled young women ages thirteen to twenty-two. Young women can go there to get encouragement and support. They can be told “You Matter”, but most of all they can hear the truth of God and what God is doing.

25 Ways to Breathe Life Into Your Day

Do you go through your day drained and exhausted? As a mom of ten kids, I understand. There is always so much to do, it’s hard to slow down … let alone stop to catch a breath. But as moms we need that. We need refreshment. We need joy. We need to find ways to breathe life into our days.

Here are ways to do that:

Recharge

Recharging is taking our focus off of all the tasks and doing something that we enjoy. It’s filling up after being poured out. It’s engaging our bodies, our minds and our senses. Here are some ways to recharge:

1. Take a walk

2. Enjoy a cup of tea

3. Listen to your favorite soundtrack

4. Tend your garden

6. Take a nap

7. Listen to an inspiring podcast

8. Listen to a Psalm on the Bible App
