So I got to hang out with some really cool writing friends this week. (Read to the end to find out how you can have days like this.)
First, I hung out with author and editor Robin Patchen. She shared a ton about editing fiction. She took me step-by-step through how to edit my next novel. Even though I’ve written lots of novels she had so many good reminders, and everything she shared would be GOLD to someone who doesn’t know where to go with their editing.
Then, I hung out with author Tracy Higley. She chatted about Deep Writing. Tracy shared how she can’t just write anywhere. Instead, she needs to give herself time and space. She also talked about research, and her tip of starting your research in the young-adult, non-fiction section of the library was BRILLIANT. Also, she shared about how she sets up a scene by jotting down the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch before she writes a scene. So good. Oh, another thing she said is that you can only “learn” so much about writing. You’ll soon forget it unless you use it. The best learning comes from the writing. YES!
I also got to hang out with the amazing Joy Polis Groblebe, who is the Senior Marketing Manager at (in)courage & Publishing at DaySpring. After 18 minutes of her chatting, I had to pause her to go write down all the tips I’ve already learned before I forgot. JUST what I needed to hear … or be reminded of … concerning social media. Joy said (in a nutshell), to find creative ways to talk about your book every day and use the same material throughout social media and on your blog. BRILLIANT. I’m excited to go back and finish soaking up her wisdom!
Now, how did I do this? Through my Facebook subscription group Writing That Book. EVERY DAY (except Sunday) experts like these share their best ideas and tips over Facebook LIVE and answer subscribers’ questions. I’ve written 70 books and I learn something every day!

I also upload teaching videos and worksheets every week for subscribers. Last week I shared about how to write a fiction book proposal. And on Fridays I interview experts.
Another fun aspect? Author Lisa T. Bergren led a LIVE brainstorming session, and on February 20 all the agents of Books & Such Literary Management hosted an agent round table, on LIVE video in the group.
I get asked all the time how to write a book and get published, and I believe I pulled together amazing material and experts to help.
I LOVE my subscription group, especially since the members are just as awesome as the experts!
I know I don’t share about this group enough, but it’s really an awesome secret that I need to share more!
