Where Writers Write

I’m very blessed to have a little spare bedroom that I use as my office. It faces our backyard, so I can see when our chooks (that’s Australian for chickens) are free-ranging their way to my husband’s vegetable patch. We’re often visited by rosellas, lorikeets, and kookaburras which add a splash of color (and laughter) to the day. Just beyond my window is a potted Christmas tree I bought a few years ago which helps keep my room cool during hot Australian summers.
On my (much cleaner than normal) desk I have a collection of things that spark memories and inspiration. My love of the Regency era derives from Jane Austen so I have a badge my sister gave me that says “I randomly quote Jane Austen” – because I do! Next to that is an ammonite fossil that links to my new release A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh, which is about a fossil-hunting scientist in Regency England. I also have a calendar my clever, creative eldest daughter made, complete with a picture of Yosemite National Park which we were fortunate enough to visit last year on a very special family holiday. (My husband, four children and I traveled up the US west coast to see my sister in Vancouver, Canada – we were fortunate to see so many iconic places! Pics at my website)
Of course, I have the ubiquitous cup of coffee (Gloria Jean’s caramel blend today) in my Monet-inspired mug to spark the brain cells, with a liter bottle of water ready to cleanse the system.
I love my MacBook Pro, which has all sorts of functionality, as well as being portable for when I’m in the throes of creativity and must keep writing, like on the school pick-up run (when my children are at school it’s writing time). I also love my McBlooms hand cream which is a nice way to pamper my hardworking hands. I’ve also got a beautiful New York ‘Water Blossom’ candle which helps me relax. I had a gorgeous bergamot-scented candle which I used as my hero’s scent in my first historical romance, The Elusive Miss Ellison, so having nice scents is important to me.
Within easy reach are a collection of resources, including Georgette Heyer’s Regency World, an invaluable book about the customs of the Regency era, an atlas (which I often use for character name and setting inspiration), a Bible, and various sheets of information about popular Regency-era names, correct titles and forms of address for aristocracy, etc. I have Bible verses on the wall to inspire me to remember what love in romance should look like, some British pound notes and postcards as incentive to revisit England one day, and on one wall I have a fantastic black and white map of London in Regency times.
And I have my published books nearby as a constant reminder of God’s blessings in allowing this little Australian to be published in the US – and to encourage me to keep writing.

Carolyn Miller is an Inspirational Regency romance author who lives in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia with her husband and four children. More about A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh
Can a very proper noble lady find a future with a fossil-hunting man of faith?

As the daughter of Viscount Aynsley, Caroline Hatherleigh knows every rule of society—and she’s always followed them precisely. It’s simply the way things are done in her world. When she visits south Devonshire and encounters a fossil-hunting scientist and his sister, her assumptions about what is right are shaken. She is suddenly confronted by questions she has never considered about the importance of friendship and faith—and her comfortable understanding about how the world works is thrown off balance.
Gideon Kirby loves science, and hunting down proof of past lives is a joy he won’t willingly give up. But his scientific leanings are being challenged by both his personal beliefs and by local smugglers in the Devonshire countryside. And every day his sister’s illness is becoming more desperate and her care grows more demanding. Adding a proper Viscount’s daughter to the mix is a complication Gideon never expected—especially since he has a secret that demands he stays far away from this young woman he’s falling for in order to protect his beloved sister.
When a mysterious stranger visits the village, that secret is set to be exposed, no matter how Gideon fights. Then tragedy strikes in a smugglers cave. And the threat of scandal may lead to broken hearts and passionless propriety. Will the shaky bond these two have managed to build be strong enough to overcome their differences—or will the trust they’ve withheld from each other end up tearing three lives apart?
