Q&A with Kathy Howard

TG: Why did you write Heirloom?

When I was packing up my parents’ home I discovered a century-old letter written by my Great-great-grandmother to my great-grandfather. In the letter, she wrote out a prayer she prayed daily for him and his daughter, my maternal grandmother. I was encouraged because I knew her faithful prayers impacted me too. I was also challenged to be more purposeful in how I live today because my faith WILL impact future generations. That letter caused me to focus on spiritual legacy.

TG: Did you have any surprises or learning moments while writing Heirloom?

I knew the Bible taught about passing down our faith, but I was honestly surprised at just how much God focuses on it. It is a God-given responsibility.

TG: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

I hope readers will be encouraged that even little things can have a big impact. And I hope that the book will equip them with practical tools and ideas to leave a spiritual heritage.

TG: What habits would you encourage others to take up to be a more productive writer?

Discipline. I still struggle with getting distracted by things that vie for my attention like social media or email. I have found that if I set a timer for a set period of concentration I get far more done!

TG: What do you snack on or drink while writing?

Coffee for sure! And sometimes chocolate!

TG: How do you overcome writer’s block?

I get up and do something physically active – exercise, vacuum, something that doesn’t require concentration. It seems to reset my brain!

TG: Are you an “edit-as-you-go” writer or do you wait until the very end before you do any editing?

I am a verrrry slow writer because I do edit and rewrite as I go. My “first draft” is usually pretty clean and close to being ready to go!

TG: What is the best piece of writing advice you’re ever received?

To go to a Christian Writer’s Conference
