Two Dogs Loved

Well, sad news. Last month we had to put down our sweet dog Jake. He was 1/2 Scottie and 1/2 Pomeranian. He was chasing a squirrel in our yard and his ACL tore (or the dog version of an ACL). Then, while we were waiting for his surgery date he was STILL chasing squirrels (on 3 legs) and his other ACL tore, so he was in a lot of pain and couldn’t walk at all.
The surgery was very expensive, with no guarantees that it would heal, so we decided we had to put him down. Nathan (20) and I were with him, and it was so hard! He was Nathan’s dog, and it happened just a few days before Nathan’s birthday.

The little kids were bawling that night, and really having a hard time, and I heard these words coming out of John’s mouth. “Don’t worry we’re going to get a puppy right away.” Well, that made them happy!

My husband John really isn’t an animal person, and I think he melted when he saw his kids crying.

So, after doing a lot of research on dogs that would be a good fit for our family (and ones that lived a long time!) We got a puppy on Friday!

Well, Nathan got a puppy for his birthday, but I want her!

Zelda is 9 weeks old, and she’s the smartest pup I’ve ever seen. Within an hour she started using the doggie door, and the only accident she had inside the house was when I was in the kids room with her, cleaning, and the door was shut and she couldn’t get out. She’s already coming to her name when we call and is very good with the kids. We feel blessed! She’s a Shiba Inu, and she’ll get to be between 18-20 lbs. Right now she’s 4 1/2 pounds. Isn’t she cute?

We still miss our Jake, but we’re thankful for this adorable puppy!

We have a dog years and years after my schnauzer-terrier died of old age. She was my childhood dog, pretty much. Now I’m 40 and I have a lab named Ace. He’s one and a half going on 6 weeks. He just is still all puppy, despite being full grown and capable of knocking small children down.

Tricia, hearing about Jake makes me think. All the terriers that I’ve seen have a hunting gene for squirrels. They just have to find and trap and kill the little guys until there’s none left. Our lab, such as he is, can’t stand still long enough to actually see a squirrel.

It’s so sad to lose a dog as good as Jake and breaking the kids hearts is just too hard to bear. I’m glad Zelda is filling a void, but I’d still save some tears for missing Jake.

Yes, Jake was going to chase squirrels as long as he could. It was totally “in” him. We miss him!

Our dogs do become a part of our families and their loss is as painful as any the loss of any family member. We lost our two cockers within a month of each other back in ’07. For about two weeks I thought, isn’t it nice to not be tied down with a dog. So two weeks after that we picked up Dino the wonder dog at the local humane society. He is 100% mutt and 200% pure-love.
