What was your favorite book as a child?

When I was young my great aunt gave me the Caldecott Award winning book each Christmas. I treasured those stories, and I still have some of those books today. One of my favorites is One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey. The illustrations are beautiful, and the setting and story reminded me of my visits to my Grandparents who live on the Oregon coast. I’d often get up early and go with my dad to dig for clams at the beach just like Sal in One Morning in Maine.

What book did you read that first made you want to be an author?

I will always remember reading Liz Curtis Higgs’s first novel, Mixed Signals, set in Abingdon, Virginia. It was such a lovely romance and it had realistic faith elements woven in so well. When I closed the last page I remember thinking, that’s the kind of book I want to write.

What was the last book you read, just for fun?

I’m enjoying Lady Jayne Disappears by Joanna Davidson Politano. It’s set in Victorian England and has a delightful mix of history, romance, and mystery. Very well done.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I’m halfway through Until We Find Home by Cathy Gohlke, and I’m loving this moving WW2 story. We traveled to England together on a research trip, visiting the Lake District where this book is set, so it’s extra special to read the final version of this delightful story!

What upcoming releases are you most looking forward to?

I’m very much looking forward to reading The Lacemaker by Laura Frantz. She’s one of my favorite authors, and I’m hearing great things about this novel. I’m also looking forward to reading Winning Miss Winthrop by Carolyn Miller,  A Song Unheard by Roseanna White, and Isaiah’s Daughter by Mesu Andrews.

More about Across the Blue

Set in Edwardian England and ideal for readers who enjoy Julie Klassen novels, this romance about an English aviation pioneer and the girl who falls in love with him is filled with adventure and faith.

Isabella Grayson, the eldest daughter of a wealthy, English newspaper magnate, longs to become a journalist, but her parents don’t approve. They want her to marry well and help them gain a higher standing in society. After she writes an anonymous letter to the editor that impresses her father, her parents reluctantly agree she can write a series of articles about aviation and the race to fly across the English Channel, but only if she promises to accept a marriage proposal within the year. When James Drake, an aspiring aviator, crashes his flying machine at the Grayson’s new estate, Bella is intrigued. James is determined to be the first to fly across the Channel and win the prize Mr. Grayson’s newspaper is offering. He hopes it will help him secure a government contract to build airplanes and redeem a terrible family secret. James wants to win Bella’s heart, but his background and lack of social standing make it unlikely her parents would approve. If he fails to achieve his dream, how will he win the love and respect he is seeking? Will Bella’s faith and support help him find the strength and courage he needs when unexpected events turn their world upside down?
