Writer’s Wednesday with Becky Kopitzke: Where Writer’s Write

Working from home has its benefits. I can fold a load of towels between phone calls and toss dinner in the crock pot at lunch.
But my home office life has plenty of drawbacks, too. For example, I can fold a load of towels between phone calls and toss dinner in the crock pot at lunch.
The boundaries between work and home are easily tripped. Some days that’s a blessing, and other days it means my deadlines must answer to a nine-year-old begging for Oreos.

I’m a writer. Author, blogger, freelance editor, writing coach—choose a title and I’ll wear it well. But as with most writers, writing isn’t all I do. Beyond my desk, I’m also the mom of two tween daughters, wife of an entrepreneur husband (who also works from home), and proud owner of a yappy office dog who inevitably howls at the Fed Ex guy just as soon as I hop on a podcast Zoom.
In my genre of Christian non-fiction lifestyle, my family fuels my writing. Our daily joys and challenges provide endless fodder for books and blogging, including lessons learned the hard way. I try to approach writing and family life, not as separate entities but rather intertwined gifts working in synergy.
That means this time of year I’m juggling writing projects with popsicles, play dates and trips to the city swimming pool. My countertops hold extra dirty dishes, my carpets carry extra dirt, and somehow I’m still picking up the same amount of dog poo in the yard because nobody else wants to do it.
I love this glorious life.
During the school year, I can drop my girls off at school then park at my desk for six hours until pick-up time. Summer, however, is a season of fluidity. When I really need to write in summer, I do this:
Announce my plans. I tell my family, “Mom is blocking out Monday morning for work. I have a big project to get done.” That way everybody knows when I’ll be in work mode, which means—don’t ask for homemade pancakes; pour yourself some Lucky Charms instead.
Get up early. In summer I’ll rise with the sun to get a few hours of work accomplished before my children are even thinking about cracking their eyes open for the day. This is when I’m grateful for the tween years. Unlike babies and toddlers, older kids actually sleep.
Tag-team. My husband and I compare schedules daily and strategize how to cover for one another when either of us is staring down a tight deadline or can’t-miss meeting.
Ask for help. Finally, I empower my children to cooperate—with me and one another—in order to allow Mom some uninterrupted work time. Lately, I pay my 12-year-old to “babysit” her sister; then I pay them both as a reward for getting along.
For all its hassle, the writing + family life is truly a dream come true. I’m blessed to do what I love, with the people I love best surrounding me. It doesn’t get much better than that!
