Writer Wednesday with Carolyn Miller: A Day in the Life
G’day! Greetings from an author of historical romance who happens to live in Australia.
What does my typical day look like?
6 am – wake up. Oh, how I’d like to sleep in longer, but I suspect I’m turning into my early-rising mother! At this time the house is still, quietly infusing its inhabitants with the peace needed to deal with the day – or at least more sleep! It’s a great time to have a cup of tea, read my Bible, pray. Then check emails ☺
7.15 – wake up those kidlets who aren’t yet awake. My four children are now more grown (my eldest is 16, youngest is ten) which means less of the running around in the morning routine. Today my ten-year-old has to get to school early for band practice, which requires a bit of chasing to ensure he has shoes on, a warm jumper (it’s winter here in Australia), and his lunch made and packed in his bag. Oh, and his trumpet. It’s hard to do band practice without a trumpet!
8.30-8.45 – time for the high schoolers to go to school. We pray for their day on the way then it’s “Love you! See You! It’s fine today so you can walk home!”
8.45 – exhale. Drive the two minutes to the gym.
8.47-10.30ish – I’ve recently joined the gym (!) which means you have to get there early to beat the older ladies who come to the Pump class to check out the gym instructor. Today is Pump, where we lift lighter weights (which always feel too heavy). Yesterday was Pilates (my fave). Tomorrow is aqua aerobics – where I feel like I can finally keep up with these very fit older ladies! ☺
10.30ish – 11.30 – normally after the gym, I head straight home and get stuck into writing work, whether that be creating, editing, marketing, blogging, etc. But I’m trying to be more intentional about connecting with people, especially non-Christians, so today I’m having coffee with a new friend I’ve made at the gym. I’ve spent a lot of time locked in my garret in my office writing these past three years (somewhat necessary to see 3 books released each year!) which is part of the reason I need to go to the gym! (all that sitting, all that chocolate).
11.30 – 3 pm – peak writing time. Today I’m working on proofing edits for my November release Misleading Miss Verity (set in Scotland!). I LOVE this story, so this isn’t a chore at all.
3 pm – 6 pm – it’s the post-school fun of homework, appointments, sports training, etc. I’m trying to be more ‘present’, so it’s a good time to do stuff like prepare dinner while my kids decompress about their day.
6 pm – dinner, then clean up. My kidlets rotate chores, which makes life a little easier ☺
Post dinner – we FaceTime my hubby (currently working in New Zealand), older kiddies finish homework, younger ones might watch TV or read. Then it’s shower, bed, read a bit, then sleep.

More about Underestimating Miss Cecilia

Will a shrinking violet and a prodigal son come together to better their world?
Cecilia Hatherleigh has many secrets in her shy, sweetheart—but none bigger than her unrequited love for Edward Amherst, the earl’s son next door. Her love has persevered over many years, even when he grows to be a bit of a rake. Yet despite his fondness for females, he never seems to see her as anything more than the quiet younger sister, and nothing Cecy does has changed that. Rather than pining after his perhaps unworthy love, she decides to turn her focus toward living out her newfound faith. Now she’s determined to follow God’s leading to make a better world for the poor and dispossessed around her.
A London riot awakens Edward to the responsibilities due his family name. It’s time to turn his life around to please his noble father—and that means restoring his abandoned legal career and making a marriage of convenience. Neither will be easy, given his past and the prejudices of the upper echelons of society to which he belongs.
When misadventure strikes at a house party, these two are thrown together even as their lives are upended. If Cecy can’t trust God, overcome her shyness, and find her inner strength, the good work they’ve both done may be for naught-and neither will ever find true love . . .
Well known for her authentic Regency romances set against less-explored, true historical backgrounds, best-selling author Carolyn Miller continues her newest series with a clean, wholesome tale sure to please her many fans.
