Writer Wednesday with Karen Barnett: Books Authors Read

What was your favorite book as a child?

This is tough, because I had so many favorites over the years. One I often look back on is My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. I remember one of my teachers reading the book out loud to the class when I was young, and then I checked it out from the library over and over. I guess the idea of running away to live in the woods appealed to my introverted, nature-loving soul.

What book did you read that first made you want to be an author?

Because I was a voracious reader as a kid, I think I was already dreaming of being a writer before I picked up Richard Adams’s novel, Watership Down. I remember noticing how his rabbit characters used storytelling to encourage one another during tense times and to shape their culture. That might be one of the first times I stopped to consider how influential storytelling could be and the great responsibility writers have to their readers.

What was the last book you read, just for fun?

I’ve become a huge fan of audiobooks because they have easily doubled my available reading time. I can listen to books while I do dishes, cook dinner, or drive to errands. Recently I finished Charles Martin’s The Mountain Between Us on audio. What a powerful story! I tried to follow it up by borrowing the movie version from the library, but the film fell flat. Books are always better, aren’t they?

What books are currently on your nightstand?

Susie Finkbeiner’s All Manner of Things and Amanda Dykes’s Whose Waves These Are. I’ve heard such incredible things, but I haven’t had time to read them yet. It’s killing me! Also, after finishing The Mountain Between Us, I ran right out and bought three more of Charles Martin’s novels. I’m confident I’ve got some great reading ahead of me.

What upcoming release are you most looking forward to?

I’d probably have to say Storm Rising by Ronie Kendig. I usually gravitate toward historicals, but I’m also hopelessly addicted to Ronie’s military fiction. I can’t seem to get enough!

More about Ever Faithful

Ever Faithful, new from author Karen Barnett

Vibrant historic Yellowstone National Park comes to life in this romantic mystery about a man hiding the truth, braving the west to become something more—and the woman who must confront his deception.

A man who can’t read will never amount to anything—or so Nate Webber believes. But he takes a chance to help his family by signing up for the new Civilian Conservation Corps, skirting the truth about certain “requirements.” Nate exchanges the harsh Brooklyn streets for the wilds of Yellowstone National Park, curious if the Eden-like wonderland can transform him as well.
Elsie Brookes was proud to grow up as a ranger’s daughter, but she longs for a future of her own. After four years serving as a maid in the park’s hotels, she still hasn’t saved enough money for her college tuition. A second job, teaching a crowd of rowdy men in the CCC camp, might be the answer, but when Elsie discovers Nate’s secret, it puts his job as camp foreman in jeopardy. Tutoring leads to friendship and romance, until a string of suspicious fires casts a dark shadow over their relationship. Can they find answers before all of their dreams go up in smoke?

Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park was some trip ….
that was my high school graduation present: i could pick anywhere in the country that I wanted to go to or pick a cruise.
A lot of memories of that vacation.
So I hope I get a chance to read Ever Faithful sometime!

As for new releases …. there’s a lot!!!
Authors keep thinking, “Gee, she bought books in that series .. I’ll invite her to join this group for this series…”
The LAWKEEPERS, Hero Hearts, Love-Inspired Books, Potter’s House Books, The Gold Diggers, The Bride Herder, Lace & Lockets …..
know there’s more than that ….

If I only had to pick one book, I’d pick The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey. Haven’t read any books that involve Coast Guard!
If I was forced to pick only one series to get at moment, I’d go with The Truth Seekers by Susan Sleeman.

Hi Karen! I love your first two National Parks books, and have the third waiting in my Amazon cart (just waiting on earning my Amazon credits through Fetch Rewards, lol. That is the only way I can budget new books currently with school expenses coming up for the kids). Loved the interview with Tricia. Thanks for the chance to win!
