Books Authors Read
What was your favorite book as a child?
My life revolved around reading, writing, and sports when I was a child (at one time I wanted to be a professional baseball player when I grew up.). Asking me to choose one book as my favorite childhood book is like asking me to choose my favorite cookie—all of them. It also depends on what age I was. I’d have to say the Little House on the Prairie series with The Long Winter as number one, followed by Harriet the Spy, Little Women, The Oregon Trail, The Changeling, the Nancy Drew mysteries, and of course, A Wrinkle in Time. I know these books were in my top ten by the number of times I read them. Over and over.
What book did you read that first made you want to be an author?
To take a slightly different spin on this question, I’ll reply with the first book that made me want to write Christian or inspirational fiction. I checked out The Healer, a book in the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson. I read it and was astonished to find that this romantic suspense novel had an underlying Christian theme. I thought: I can do this, I want to do this. It opened a whole new world to me. The fact that it was in a public library was simply the icing on the cake. I started writing my own romantic suspense novels with Christian characters and conflicts. Fifteen years later and I have fifteen published novels and several novellas under my belt.
What was the last book you read, just for fun?
I’m reading On Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbably Love Story of Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis by Patti Callahan. It’s a gorgeous, poignant, literary novel from the historical romance genre. I highly recommend it. I don’t read a lot of historical romances—unless they’re by my friend and colleague Allison Pittman, but this one drew me in because I’m fascinated by C.S. Lewis and read his book A Grief Observed, which is about the loss of the love of his life—Joy Davidman.
What books are currently on your nightstand?
If by the nightstand, we’re talking about the digital version of the TBR pile, I can tell you it’s a ridiculous stack that would teeter over my head if it were actual bound copies of the books. I love actual books best, but I have trouble seeing now and need the lighted digital version in my old age. The list includes Marcia Muller’s The Breakers, Laura R. King’s latest Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes mystery called Island of the Mad, Shell Game, the V.I. Warshawski mystery by Sara Paretsky, Transforming Prayers: How Everything Changes When You Seek God’s Face by Daniel Henderson, The Bones Will Speak, by Carrie Stuart Parks, The View from Rainshadow Bay by Colleen Coble, Beyond Justice by Cara Putman, Before We were Yours: A Novel by Lisa Wingate, and Robicheax: A Novel by James Lee Burke. In bound books, I also have Thou, Dear God, Prayers by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that I read daily and his book, A Gift of Love, Sermons from Strength to Love and Other Preachings, from which I’m reading one sermon a day.
A strange breadth of styles and genres, I suppose. Readers may be surprised that the one genre I rarely read is romance and in particular, Amish romances. As much as I enjoy writing them, I rarely read them. I like a dash of mystery and/or suspense with my romance.
What upcoming release are you most looking forward to?
To be truthful (and one must be truthful when it comes to books), I’m most looking forward to John Sandford’s new Lucas Davenport mystery, Neon Prey, which releases April 2019. I’ve been reading his Prey books for years and following the development of his lead character Lucas Davenport as an excellent example of how a male protagonist can grow and change over the years. Davenport has left behind his womanizing ways, married, had kids, went on an Atkins diet, and become middle aged. I’ve learned more about writing male characters reading his Prey, Virgil Flowers, and Kidd books than I ever will in workshops. His books are secular, violent, and contain R rated language. For a clean mystery/detective read with the same type of male characters I turn to James Scott Bell’s Ty Buchanan and Romeo series.

Nina Fischer carries a camera wherever she goes—so she can view life through a filter. Safely. After her mother abandoned her to the streets, Nina has kept people at a distance, including her uncle, who adopted Nina and her sister. Wealthy and proud, he is a good man, a fair judge, and someone many in San Antonio admire.

The two men in her life want to help, but can she trust them? She’s known Rick since they were children, but now he’s an attorney whose political aspirations seem more important than Nina’s tragic loss. And then there’s Aaron, a news videographer; using their friendship could break the biggest story of his career.
