If you ever happen to find yourself in the Liverpool Street Station in London be sure to check out the polished bronze statue of five children. Those children were part of the Kindertransport, a unique rescue program. Between 1938-1939 approximately 10,000 children (mostly Jewish) were sent from their homes and families in Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain.

This year I wrote one of those true stories. Thomas’ book Twice-Rescued Child will be released in October.

These are photos of a happier time when Thomas was still with his family. Sadly they lost their lives in concentration camps.

Thomas, Tony, and playmate in sandbox.

But even before I wrote Thomas’ true story, I wrote a novel about this time in history. A Daring Escape is a gripping tale of hope, self-sacrifice, and the power of unrelenting love overcoming unspeakable hate.

As the threat of World War II looms on the horizon, American Amity Mitchell is living a comfortable life abroad as a tutor in England. Life changes when an urgent telegram arrives from her brother, Andrew, summoning her to Prague. Nazi forces tighten their grip on the country, and Andrew’s efforts to help Jewish children escape Czechoslovakia grow desperate. Children’s lives are at risk. Amity knows she can’t ignore God’s call to join her brother’s cause.

Amity’s boss, Clark, arrives in Prague, urging her to return. Soon, he too finds himself helping prepare kindertransports bound for the safety of England. With the sound of German tanks rumbling over cobblestone streets, Amity and Clark race to save innocent lives. Will their prayers for deliverance be answered?

Amity means “friendship and peace,” and her name reminded me of John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

I’m in awe of those who risked their lives to save children in World War II.

I am thankful for those who stepped forward and risked everything to protect children. I’m also able I’ve been able to share these stories in both memoir and within the pages of a novel.

This looks like an amazing book! I read The Children of Willesden Lane based on the Kinder Transport with my students last year and took them to see a performance by the author (the daughter of a survivor the book is based on!).
I’d love to read your story.

This sounds so interesting since it’s a fictionalized version of a historical event. I enjoy historical fiction.

Lately I find myself fascinated by this period of time, of the children turn from their families – most to never return. Who were these kids? Who would they have become of they had grown up in their original family, environment? How on earth did they adjust and grow up to be productive humans? Terrifying, fascinating! Can’t wait to read your book on the subject, clearly your research is impeccable.

Whenever I read about the real events surrounding this war, and really any war, and the acts of bravery people had, it amazes and humbles me. Would I have done all I could to rescue others? Would I be the one needing other’s help in being rescued? I love that you took a true story and created something fictional. I love historcal fiction, and this one seems especially touching.
