Writer’s Desk Issue No: 8: Kimberley Woodhouse

Kimberley Woodhouse is a CBA and ECPA best-selling and award-winning author of more than twenty fiction and non-fiction books which have earned her many accolades including Christian Retailing’s Top Pick and Publisher’s Weekly starred reviews. A popular speaker and teacher, she’s shared her theme of “Joy Through Trials” with more than a million people across the country at more than 2,000 events. Hundreds of national radio and television appearances have featured Kimberley, her books, and their family’s story. Kim and her incredible husband of twenty-five-plus years have two adult children. Q&A with Kimberley Woodhouse
Do you have a writing routine? When/Where do you write?
Yes, I do. Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri, and Sat I normally put in a lot of hours in my office. My office is a fabulous, large area in our home where I’m surrounded by books, my desk is covered in research, and there are windows and exercise equipment. <giggle>
When are you most productive?
That’s an excellent question. Mornings, afternoons, evenings.
What do you snack on or drink while writing?
Water. Lots and lots of water.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
I haven’t had it (Praise God!)
What is your outlining process? Are you a pantser/plotter or something in between?
I write out a synopsis (because I can be a pantser during that process) and then I don’t get stuck when I’m writing the book, because I’ve done the research and prep. And I can still let creative juices flow or let things change as I’m writing it.
Best advice for someone who is just starting out.
Write, write, write.
What are your three tips for fostering our creative selves?
- A creative journal. (I wrote a blog post about that.)
- Making writing a discipline rather than just a fun, creative outlet.
- Have a good crit group/brainstorming group. People you trust with your life 🙂
