More about To Spark a Match
“Turano takes readers on a lighthearted romp through matchmaking season . . . . This is a delight.”–Publishers Weekly on A Match in the Making
After five unsuccessful Seasons on the marriage mart, Miss Adelaide Duveen has resigned herself to the notion that she’s destined to remain a spinster forever–a rather dismal prospect, but one that will allow her to concentrate on her darling cats and books. However, when she inadvertently stumbles upon Mr. Gideon Abbott engaged in a clandestine activity during a dinner party, Adelaide finds herself thrust into a world of intrigue that resembles the plots in the spy novels she devours.
Former intelligence agent Gideon Abbott feels responsible for Adelaide after society threatens to banish her because of the distraction she caused to save his investigation. Hoping to return the favor, he turns to a good friend–and one of high society’s leaders–to take Adelaide in hand and turn her fashionable. When danger surrounds them and Adelaide finds herself a target of the criminals in Gideon’s case, the spark of love between them threatens to be quenched for good–along with their lives.

Q&A with Jen Turano
TG: What is your writing process like?
JT: I always know how a story begins – well, at least the opening paragraph, as well as the ending, and then I plot out five chapters at a time, but only five because my characters tend to have minds of their own. If I plot out more than five, it never works out well for me.
TG: What is your writing Kryptonite?
JT: Comedic scenes that don’t actually move the plot forward, but I think are hilarious and don’t want to delete.
TG: If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
JT: First drafts are always going to be really bad.
TG: What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
JT: Building a she-shed during COVID.
TG: What did you edit out of To Spark a Match?
JT: I had a really complicated plot twist – it was actually two twists, so after I was ready to pull my hair out, I finally decided to get rid of one villain, which made my life so much easier and saved me from having a nervous breakdown.
TG: What is the most difficult thing about being an author?
JT: In all honesty, after some of the jobs I held when I worked in fashion, being an author is downright pleasant, but if I have to choose something difficult – probably being by myself for hours on end to write since I’m a pretty social person.
TG: Which of your books was the most fun to write?
JT: Out of the Ordinary
TG: Which was the most difficult — and why?
JT: To Disguise the Truth. That was the final book in my Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, but I had to write that during the end of the COVID lockdown. By that time, I was feeling less than amused about life in general, which made it really difficult to write romantic comedy.
TG: What is coming up next for you?
JT: I’m just wrapping up edits for Meeting Her Match, the final book in the Matchmaker series. After that, I’ll be starting a new series surrounding the Merriweather Academy for Young Ladies, although it may turn out that not all the students are young ladies, and…they may not even be all female. Stay tuned.
