Writer’s Desk with Carmen Schober
Carmen Schober, author of After She Falls, is a wife, mom, and design show enthusiast! Growing up, she experienced two fascinating worlds, thanks to her mother’s Cuban heritage and her father’s ties to the American South.
When she’s not writing fiction, she curates lifestyle content for fans interested in faith, food, fashion, and everything in between.
Carmen earned a master’s degree in English literature and creative writing from Kansas State, and she currently lives in Manhattan, Kansas.
Q&A with Carmen Schober
Do you have a writing routine? When/Where do you write?
I used to! I liked to write from about 10 am-3 pm in my home office before we moved. It was painted silvery blue and wonderfully quiet. Now I don’t have an office anymore, but I do have three children under the age of four, so there is no real routine. I just wake up early and work until they’re up, and then I have a few lovely Christian gals come to play with them for about ten hours a week and get as much done as I can.
When are you most productive?
I’m an early riser. I work best if I knock out a few easy tasks first, like sending off quick emails or doing a small load of laundry, before diving into uninterrupted writing for a few hours.
What do you snack on or drink while writing?
I’m currently into Pumpkin Foam Cold Brew from Dunkin’ Donuts, but hot or iced coffee, in general, is a must-have. I also eat a ridiculous amount of those little BayBell cheese wheels.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
I’ve learned to just do it! With so many little ones around, I can’t be picky. One thing that does help me is watching my favorite movies and writing down all the different plot points. That gives me new ideas to work with.
What is your outlining process? Are you a pantser/plotter or something in between?
I’m an in-betweener! I like to have the major plots points somewhat figured out, but the story gradually changes as I write each new scene.
Best advice for someone who is just starting out.
Know who you’re writing for! Build a brand around your authentic voice, not what’s “popular.”
Quickfire questions:
Favorite thing to binge-watch: I love a good HGTV marathon.
Book currently reading: Every Knee Shall Bow by Bryan Litfin (my third novel might be historical and around a similar time period)
Favorite song right now: All Too Well by Ruston Kelly
Favorite thing to order at Starbucks: Not a Starbucks fan! But I do like their cake pops.

More about After She Falls:
“Schober delivers a knockout debut. After She Falls is refreshingly unique and well-written. While the journey of faith and healing is set against the backdrop of the MMA, Schober’s story world and characterization are vivid and evocative.”—RACHEL HAUCK, New York Times bestselling author
She’s always had that fire in her. She just needs to find it again.
Strong-willed Adri Rivera nearly achieved her goal of being a professional mixed martial artist, but then she fell in love with a man who knocked all the fight out of her. When their abusive, tumultuous relationship finally comes to a head, Adri flees with their young daughter to her small hometown in the mountains of Pennsylvania. There, she must face the people she left behind and put her broken life back together again.
A hardened Max Lyons can’t believe Adri is back in town after abruptly cutting him and everyone else off years ago. Despite the distance that grew between them, he feels compelled to help her regain her independence and offers her a job at his gym. But regaining each other’s trust is another matter, made even more complicated by the lingering spark between them. As Adri dares to pursue her dream again, she trains for a big tournament with Max’s help, but they’ll both have to confront their own doubts in order to rise victorious.
“Anyone who has watched a sports movie knows that the underdog will prevail, romance readers know that love wins, and Christian fiction readers know that God is bigger than any problem; Schober’s debut novel is unique for being a blend of the three.”—LIBRARY JOURNAL
