Where Writers Write

I’m very blessed to have a little spare bedroom that I use as my office. It faces our backyard, so I can see when our chooks (that’s Australian for chickens) are free-ranging their way to my husband’s vegetable patch. We’re often visited by rosellas, lorikeets, and kookaburras which add a splash of color (and laughter) to the day. Just beyond my window is a potted Christmas tree I bought a few years ago which helps keep my room cool during hot Australian summers.
On my (much cleaner than normal) desk I have a collection of things that spark memories and inspiration. My love of the Regency era derives from Jane Austen so I have a badge my sister gave me that says “I randomly quote Jane Austen” – because I do! Next to that is an ammonite fossil that links to my new release A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh, which is about a fossil-hunting scientist in Regency England. I also have a calendar my clever, creative eldest daughter made, complete with a picture of Yosemite National Park which we were fortunate enough to visit last year on a very special family holiday. (My husband, four children and I traveled up the US west coast to see my sister in Vancouver, Canada – we were fortunate to see so many iconic places! Pics at my website)
Of course, I have the ubiquitous cup of coffee (Gloria Jean’s caramel blend today) in my Monet-inspired mug to spark the brain cells, with a liter bottle of water ready to cleanse the system.
I love my MacBook Pro, which has all sorts of functionality, as well as being portable for when I’m in the throes of creativity and must keep writing, like on the school pick-up run (when my children are at school it’s writing time). I also love my McBlooms hand cream which is a nice way to pamper my hardworking hands. I’ve also got a beautiful New York ‘Water Blossom’ candle which helps me relax. I had a gorgeous bergamot-scented candle which I used as my hero’s scent in my first historical romance, The Elusive Miss Ellison, so having nice scents is important to me.
Within easy reach are a collection of resources, including Georgette Heyer’s Regency World, an invaluable book about the customs of the Regency era, an atlas (which I often use for character name and setting inspiration), a Bible, and various sheets of information about popular Regency-era names, correct titles and forms of address for aristocracy, etc. I have Bible verses on the wall to inspire me to remember what love in romance should look like, some British pound notes and postcards as incentive to revisit England one day, and on one wall I have a fantastic black and white map of London in Regency times.
And I have my published books nearby as a constant reminder of God’s blessings in allowing this little Australian to be published in the US – and to encourage me to keep writing.

More about A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh
Can a very proper noble lady find a future with a fossil-hunting man of faith?

As the daughter of Viscount Aynsley, Caroline Hatherleigh knows every rule of society—and she’s always followed them precisely. It’s simply the way things are done in her world. When she visits south Devonshire and encounters a fossil-hunting scientist and his sister, her assumptions about what is right are shaken. She is suddenly confronted by questions she has never considered about the importance of friendship and faith—and her comfortable understanding about how the world works is thrown off balance.
Gideon Kirby loves science, and hunting down proof of past lives is a joy he won’t willingly give up. But his scientific leanings are being challenged by both his personal beliefs and by local smugglers in the Devonshire countryside. And every day his sister’s illness is becoming more desperate and her care grows more demanding. Adding a proper Viscount’s daughter to the mix is a complication Gideon never expected—especially since he has a secret that demands he stays far away from this young woman he’s falling for in order to protect his beloved sister.
When a mysterious stranger visits the village, that secret is set to be exposed, no matter how Gideon fights. Then tragedy strikes in a smugglers cave. And the threat of scandal may lead to broken hearts and passionless propriety. Will the shaky bond these two have managed to build be strong enough to overcome their differences—or will the trust they’ve withheld from each other end up tearing three lives apart?

Thank you Carolyn Miller for sharing your writing space and your inspiration that you surround yourself with.
Thanks Heather! There really is so much that can be inspiring in this world, isn’t there? Thanks so much for your encouragement!
I love hearing more about your writing space! I wish I could see/hear the birds…that sounds delightful. Congrats on your new book baby!
Thanks Brandi! Given the native birds, maybe I should dust off my old contemporary stories set in Australia!. Hmm… 🤔
I am not familiar with Carolyn’s writing, but have recently enjoyed several other regency novels, so I think I might enjoy this book!
HI Patty! I do hope you get the chance to read some of my novels. I’ve been inspired by Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer and try to blend interesting historical details with hope, humor and a strong spiritual element, too. If you want to start at the beginning, then have a read of my Pride and Prejudice-like debut novel, The Elusive Miss Ellison. I hope you enjoy!
I’ve not read a book by Carolyn yet but I look forward to doing so. This one looks inviting! 😀
Hi Sabrina! I do hope you’ll check out some of my books. I really enjoy adding interesting historical details and A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh delves into the start of the archeological fervor in early 1800s England. Of course, if you want to start at the beginning of the entire regency Brides collection, then you may want to check out my Pride and Prejudice-is debut novel The Elusive Miss Ellison, which readers have enjoyed for its witty humor and romance.
I love the description of your writing place! I wish I could see all the wildlife! 😄
Thanks for the opportunity.
HI Brandi! Thanks for your kind words. Yes, the Australian wildlife is pretty unique and cute! We live in a small town, but we don’t have kangaroos hopping down our street – but one day we did have a kangaroo (or maybe it was a wallaby) actually hop all the way up our driveway, into our backyard and onto our back deck – right next to my office window! So bizarre – and pretty awesome, too! I hope you get the chance to enjoy my book one day soon! xx
That’s SO cool! I had a very similar experience in Virginia. I was feeding my kids lunch and looked out my front window, wondering who’s big black dog was walking down my driveway. I looked closer and realized it was a black bear, strolling down my lane. He disappeared into the tree line and never saw him again.
